The "relatable coach" trap that's keeping you underpaid
and why warm, helpful content is actively repelling the high-level clients you deserve
The call started like so many others.
She’d been staring into the distance for a solid minute before she finally spoke. “I just... I don’t get it” she said, her voice cracking slightly. “My peers are signing $10K clients like it’s nothing. Meanwhile, I’m in the DMs every single day talking to people who love what I do, who tell me I’m amazing, and then...” She trailed off, shaking her head.
“And then?” I prompted gently.
“And then they ghost me. Or they hit me with every excuse in the book… They need to think about it. They need to check with their spouse. They need to wait until next month when cash flow is better. They absolutely adore what I do... but they just can’t commit right now.”
I could see the frustration radiating through the screen. She was gripping her coffee mug like it was the only thing keeping her grounded.
“I know I’m incredible at what I do,” she continued. “The transformations I create are real. The results speak for themselves. I’ve got the testimonials, the case studies, the whole thing! So why the hell are people treating my premium offers like a maybe instead of a hell yes?!”
I took a breath. This was going to sting, but she needed to hear it.
“I gotta be blunt with you,” I said. “You’re super relatable and approachable, and that’s unfortunately why hardly any premium, ready-to-invest-10K clients are beating at your door.”
Her eyes widened. “Wait, what??”
“Well the problem is that you’re positioning yourself as relatable and approachable when premium clients are actually searching for someone who’s powerful and unyielding. Someone who has higher standards and will hold them to those standards until they reach their next level.”
She sat back in her chair, processing.
And that’s when everything started to shift.
The relatability trap that’s costing you premium clients
I walked her through what was really happening with her brand. Her whole presence screamed “I’m just like you!” when what high-level clients desperately needed to hear was “I’m where you want to be, and I have a proven method to get you here.”
“Think about it from their perspective for a second,” I said. “Would you invest 5-figures to work with someone who feels like your bestie? Someone you could grab coffee with and vent about how hard everything is?
Or would you invest that kind of money with someone who’s already conquered the mountain you’re trying to climb? Someone who’s been battle-hardened and now has the strength, wisdom, and power to guide you through the treacherous terrain to the top?”
She was nodding slowly now, the realization starting to dawn.
“Premium clients aren’t looking for a friend. They’ve got friends. They’re looking for a leader. A powerful guide who can hold them steady when they inevitably wobble or get scared of making the big moves they know they need to make.”
“But I thought...” she started.
“I know,” I interrupted. “You thought being relatable would build trust. And you’re right, it does. But these are people who have likely worked with multiple coaches and service providers before. They know what accessible looks like versus what powerful looks like. And they need powerful in their corner. So when everything you post feels safe and relatable and designed to make everyone feel included, they’re not getting the signal they need.”
I could see her scrolling through her Instagram feed on her phone, looking at her recent posts with fresh eyes.
“Right now, nothing about your presence is communicating that you have the authority and leadership capacity to take them where they need to go” I said.
Why “relatable” doesn’t command premium prices
We all do this though! And it makes complete sense actually.
Relatability is how we’re all taught to build trust in our everyday lives. It works beautifully for friendships. It’s perfect for building initial rapport. It feels natural and authentic.
But that’s not how premium positioning works though.
When everything you post feels safe, relatable, and designed to make everyone feel included, high-level clients aren’t getting the hit of “this person has the power to change my reality in profound ways.”
High-level clients have worked with enough coaches and service providers to know the difference between accessible and powerful.
They’re not investing to feel comfortable. They’re investing when they feel certain that their life is about to fundamentally change.
From “nice to hire” to “MUST hire”
This is where unlearning needs to happen if you want to move from being a “nice to hire” to a “MUST hire.”
You need to shift from the Helper zone into the Activator zone. From someone people consider working with “one day” to THE ONE they need to hire immediately because waiting feels more expensive than a 5+ figure investment.
You see, premium clients make investment decisions completely differently than tire-kickers and browsers. They’re not looking at your content thinking “do I like this person?” They’re asking themselves much more strategic questions: “Does this person have the authority to lead me where I need to go? Do they demonstrate the kind of power and certainty I need right now? Can they hold me to a higher standard when I want to back down from the big moves? Have they already achieved what I’m trying to achieve?”
They’re evaluating your brand positioning, your messaging, and your content through the lens of leadership, not likability.
They want to feel the certainty that comes from working with someone who isn’t figuring it out alongside them, but who has already figured it out and is now guiding others through.
This is a completely different evaluation process than what most people go through when considering a lower-ticket offer.
At the premium level, clients are investing serious money and they need serious certainty. They need to know that you won’t just be cheerleading, but that you’ll be the powerful force that pulls them up to the next level even when they resist.
This means your content needs to reflect elevated positioning. Instead of showing up as the friend who’s “in the trenches with you”, your messaging needs to communicate clear authority without apologizing for being blunt and no-nonsense. And your brand needs to signal that you operate at a level that matches the transformation your premium clients are seeking.
When you position yourself with this level of authority and leadership, premium clients see you as THE answer they’ve been searching for. The one who will actually get them results instead of just making them feel good about taking the more comfortable path.
Your content should showcase your expertise, your unique methodology, and your track record in a way that demonstrates mastery, not just competence.
Your messaging should speak directly to the specific outcomes your premium clients are desperate to achieve, not general improvements that appeal to everyone.
And your brand should feel exclusive and powerful, not accessible and safe.
Now, this doesn’t mean being cold or unapproachable. If you have a warm and bubbly personality, that should absolutely be a part of your brand. It means being clear about the level of mastery you operate at ,and the caliber of clients you serve. It means owning your expertise instead of downplaying it to make others comfortable. It means standing firmly in your authority and letting that speak for itself.
The transformation is real (and repeatable)
I’ve watched this shift happen 100s of times over the past 5 years, and the results are always remarkable.
That client came to me struggling to sell $2K offers, constantly hearing price objections and drowning in “let me think about it” responses. Her content was warm, helpful, and incredibly relatable. But within just 5 months of elevating her positioning to match her actual expertise? She hit over $20K in sales.
Another client had been operating from a "we're all in this together" brand for years. The second she stepped into owning her authority without apologizing for it, and shifting her content to speak to buyers vs browsers she sold out her retreat AND filled her coaching. High-level clients started reaching out because her presence finally represented the calibre of transformation she was actually delivering.
See, when you know how to position yourself as the premium guide you are, and when you know how to communicate your value, you step into a completely different level of magnetism. This is when:
Price objections disappear. Instead of “I need to think about it”, you hear “When can we start?”
Nightmare clients stop sliding into your DMs. The tire-kickers, excuse-makers, and energy vampires naturally filter themselves out.
You become MUST hire instead of a “nice to hire” option, so you’re no longer competing on price but you’re standing in a category of one.
Your choice from here
You have a decision to make now.
You can keep following the “relatable nice girl” playbook that’s keeping you stuck in the underpaid Helper zone, working harder than ever for clients who still hesitate at your prices.
Or you can elevate your brand positioning and messaging to premium level and become the sought-after Activator who gets people to see you as THE ONE they desperately need. The one they need to invest in immediately because not working with you feels riskier than the 5-figure.
The transformations you create are real. The results speak for themselves. Now it’s time for your positioning to reflect the power you already possess.
If you're ready to make that shift, book a Pathway Call with me. We'll look at where your brand is keeping you in the friend zone instead of the authority zone, and what it takes to position yourself as the must-have investment.
Your premium clients are out there right now, actively searching for someone exactly like you. The question is: Will they recognize you when they find you?

Absolute lightbulb moment for me when you said premium clients aren’t looking for friends, they’re looking for leaders. Thank you. You have no idea how much this hits for me. It’s like a window has opened and the path forward is clear ☀️
This was really helpful. I’m definitely going to shift things because I’ve been more gentle than I actually want to be.
